The Bortle scale is a nine-point ruler for how dark the night sky really is. It was published in 2001 by amateur astronomer John Bortle, who was tired of people describing skies with vague words like “pretty dark” or “not bad.” He wanted something you could actually compare — a Class 1 sky in one country meaning the same thing as a Class 1 sky in another. The number doesn’t measure light in a lab sense; it describes what a trained eye can see when it looks up.
That’s the part worth holding onto. Bortle isn’t about how black the sky looks in a photo — it’s about what disappears. As artificial light creeps in, the faintest things go first: the Milky Way’s texture, then the Milky Way itself, then whole constellations, until you’re left with a handful of the brightest stars floating in a grey wash.
From city glow to true dark
At the bright end, Class 8 and 9 are inner-city skies. You might count a few dozen stars on a good night, and the sky itself glows a dull orange or grey that never fully goes dark. This is where most people live, and it’s why so many adults have genuinely never seen the Milky Way.
The middle of the scale is where most accessible stargazing happens. A Class 4 sky — think a rural town or the edge of suburbia — shows the Milky Way as a faint band near the horizon, and constellations start to fill in with their fainter stars. It’s a real sky. You can see satellites drift over, catch a meteor, and pick out a few star clusters with binoculars.
At Class 2 and 1, the sky stops being a backdrop and becomes a landscape. The Milky Way casts visible structure — dark rifts, bright knots, a glow bright enough to throw a faint shadow. Zodiacal light and airglow become obvious. Class 1 skies are rare enough that people plan trips around them, and once you’ve stood under one, the number stops being trivia and starts being a destination.
Why the number matters more than the forecast
Here’s the practical bit. Cloud cover and moon phase change hour to hour, but a location’s Bortle class is fixed — it’s the darkness the land itself offers. A clear, moonless night in a Class 7 sky will still never show you the Milky Way, because the limit isn’t the weather; it’s the glow on the ground. Knowing the Bortle class of the spots around you tells you what’s even possible before you check a single forecast.
